Google Search Console is a completely free tool from Google that provides direct insight into how Google crawls, indexes, and ranks your website. It is one of the most valuable SEO tools available and yet many website owners either have not set it up or are not using its full capabilities.
Setting Up Google Search Console
Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with your Google account. Add your website as a property by entering your domain URL. Verify ownership through one of the available methods including adding an HTML tag to your homepage, uploading an HTML file to your server, using your Google Analytics connection, or adding a DNS record through your domain registrar. Once verified, Search Console begins collecting data and most reports populate within 24 to 72 hours.
The Performance Report
The Performance report shows which searches are bringing people to your site, how many times your pages appeared in search results, how many clicks you received, your average position in search results, and your click-through rate. Filter the data by page to see which pages are performing well and which have poor click-through rates that could be improved with better title tags and meta descriptions. Filter by query to identify keywords where you are ranking in positions 4 to 10 and could reach page one with targeted optimisation.
The Coverage Report
The Coverage report shows which of your pages are indexed by Google and which have errors preventing indexation. Error pages need immediate attention as they represent pages that are not appearing in search results. Valid with warnings pages may have issues worth investigating. Excluded pages are pages Google has chosen not to index, which may include duplicate pages, noindex pages, or pages blocked by robots.txt.
The Core Web Vitals Report
The Core Web Vitals report shows your pages’ performance on Google’s three key page experience metrics. Pages marked as Poor or Needs Improvement should be prioritised for technical optimisation as they are at a competitive disadvantage in rankings compared to pages with Good scores.
Using Search Console for Quick SEO Wins
Sort your queries by impressions and filter for those ranking in positions 5 to 15. These keywords already have some relevance signal but need improvement to reach positions 1 to 3. Optimise the content on those pages for those specific keywords, improve the title tag and meta description, and build a few additional links to those pages. This targeted optimisation of near-first-page content often produces ranking improvements faster than working on brand new content.
